In this guide, I am going to be talking about visiting Ground Zero with your children. Taking your children to the 9/11 memorial site is definitely a personal decision. Even if your family hasn’t already talked about the terrible events of September 11 of 2001, around children actually learn about the attack on the city, at school. They learnt about it from the teachers or even their friends. Whether you are breaking the news to them yourself, you need to know that your kids will have a lot of questions regarding it. A visit to the museum will definitely provide them with a lot of context and meaning.
You are definitely aware that this is not exactly a kid-focused museum, and children may not be able to handle certain parts of the exhibit without feeling a little emotional. It is a very heavy thing to witness and visit. Whether your kid is a native New Yorker or not, I am sure that it is going to be a very emotional time when you are inside the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
You should first determine whether your kids are ready to go to this museum. This is a personal choice which depends on every single child’s sensibilities, but there are a lot of things that are good to know about this museum. The main rooms of this museum are very innocuous, including all the remains of the actual buildings that fell down. You will see a lot of kids, as of all ages at this museum, because a lot of schools bring them here. They are usually interested but saddened by the contents.
You should also know that two closed halls make up the heart of the entire museum. Neither are actually recommended for children who are under the age of 10. In the first memory and exhibit, it displays the wall of faces. It has portraits of almost 3000 men, children and women who perished on September 11 in 2001 during the plane attack. You will also see all kinds of personal artefacts, and you can hear remembrances which were recorded by the family members. It is an overwhelming amount of material that is very likely to hit home if you decide to visit it. You will see a lot of different perspectives. You will also see how the WTC became a target of this terrorist plot. You will also see the aftermath of all of these attacks. Even the rebuilding of the new world trade Centre is Sean, and you will also get an inside look at the security concerns.
You should make sure that you prepare yourself and your kids for a visit because it will be an emotional one.
